Checklist video interview preparation

Introduction

You are a manager. A film crew will interview you. What youhave to do before the interview? And how to prepare? How do you control aperfect outcome?

CHECKLIST FOR MANAGERS

1.    Bringon the interview day one or two extra shirts, 2 extra neckties.

Explanation: Your shirt might get dirty, orthe color doesn’t fit the background, or the necktie doesn’t fit the shirt. Beprepared.

2.    Takeoff your pencils from the pocket of your shirt including papers, credit cards, etc.

Explanation: Unless you are nurse or doctor(vivid pen collectors), a pencil in the pocket of your shirt looks cheap, andso do other items. At the same time, the shirt fits beter around your bodywithout objects. Of course bulky mobile phones, small notebooks, or acigarettes box have the same effects.

3.     Avoid shirts with the design of fine stripsor small blocks.

Explanation: These fine strips are okay forthe human eye, but the eye of the camera is different, and you don’t want to beon the video film with the stripes moving to the left and right.

4.    Turnoff your mobile phone during the interview, and keep the environment quiet.

Explanation: The interview microphones pick upevery sound and if you secretary receives phone calls next door this will berecorded, this might disturb the viewers of the film later.

5.    Beaware of the background.

Explanation: The viewers will not only seeyou, but also where you are. Good directors take care of the background, butsome don’t.

6.    Askthe film director or director for 15 minutes of his time to explain whatexactly is going to happen.

Explanation:  Ask for the purpose for the interview, what other peoplealready have been interviewed, what has already been said. Get to know thedirector/interviewer a bit. This makes the interview go more smoothly andrelaxed.

7.    Berelaxed, sharp and attentive.

Explanation: For some managers, the cameralooks like a machine gun and they start to act stiff and un-natural. Trust theproducer of the program that his goal is to make your shine. Dare to laugh.

8.    Helpthe interview with your timed silence.

Explanation: Most of the time the interviewerof director will do a count down, 5,4,3…and then count in your head to 1 andstart your answer. This gives space in the full that to make the proper cutslater.

9.     After you finish your last sentence, lookthe interviewer or the camera 2 extra seconds in the eye or lens.

Explanation: Very often at the end of a quote, people tend to look immediately around or away, this makes sometimes the quoteunusable in the post production, because there is no proper end.

10.  Don’t refer to previous statements.

Explanation: If you use sentences like: “LikeI just said…” or “Yesterday was Sunday…” or “This year 2009…” your quote mightbe unusable later during the editing. The video film might start with your lastquote and end with your first quote, if you refer to previous information, itdifficult to make the program work.

GoodLuck!
